I just got blindsided with a phone call that said that Marty Moates is gone forever. I was honored to know the man and I can say he was one of the nicest and most caring people I have ever met. Marty always went out of his way to say hi. He didn’t care if you were Ricky Carmichael or just a racer in the beginner class.
Marty was a true ambassador to motorcycle racing as a racer and an entrepreneur. The guy loved to ride motorcycles.
Marty Moates graced the cover of issue #6 of SMR and is still probably the best cover ever.
Details about what happened are still sketchy but apparently he was found early yesterday. There are reports that he took his own life.
This is truly one person that will be greatly missed by anyone that ever met him. An all-around nice guy that would probably give the shirt off his own back to help a fellow motorcycle racer or rider.
Words can’t describe our grief when we heard we lost such a great man.
