April 2007 – Ocala, Fl – Nasmoto kicked off the festivities of Bike Week on Saturday March 3, 2007 at the first round of the Nasmoto Championship at the Ocala Gran Prix at Ocala, Fl. Enthusiasts can see over 150 photographs of the racers and listen to podcasts of the pros and amateurs at Nasmoto.com.
Even though the sun never had a chance to peek through the clouds, the wet racing was fast and furious. During moto 1 the dirt section was utilized for all eight classes. The ruts grew with each successive race and at times the mud was above the axle.
At the start of moto 2 the dirt section was closed and the asphalt racers started gaining on the time sheets. A number of AMA pros were on hand to keep the winter rust off and skills sharp for the upcoming AMA Supermoto Championship, which is scheduled to get started in St. Louis, Mo in the early summer. Pro racers included Doug Henry of Yamaha, Johnny Lewis of KTM, Nick Daniels, Brandon Stooksbury and many others.
In moto 1 of the pro class Johnny Lewis was leading Doug Henry at the halfway point riding an ex-Jurgen Kunzel 2006 spec machine. Henry caught Lewis with an inside move on the second asphalt corner and then led him to the stripe for the win. For the remaining two motos Lewis would slot behind Henry and show him a wheel but never was able to launch a successful attack for first.
“I’m out riding and learning behind Doug (Henry),” said Johnny Lewis, KTM Unlimited Rider. “Just riding with Henry is great for my experience.”
Johnny Lewis came down from Pennsylvania and Henry from Connecticut but they didn’t travel the farthest for Round 1 of the Nasmoto contest. Tomas Puerta traveled from Colummbia and wasn’t a disappointment. His smooth touch on the bike garnered him a 2nd in MiniMoto and a 1st in Amateur.
The Nasmoto round was hosted by Southern Supermoto club. “Even though the rain came down in buckets, we had an outstanding event for Round 1 of the Nasmoto Championship,” said Ted Baker, Nasmoto VP of Operations. “The racing was good and we had participation from across the country. We are looking to keep the momentum going throughout 2007.”
