New Michigan action sports event to feature supermoto
and rally car racing on the same purpose-built course
Race is between Connecticut and Wisconsin rounds of AMA Supermoto Championship
Clio, Mich. (March 13, 2008) – For the first time in Michigan – one of the Mecca’s for motorsports racing – a new event will include supermoto motorcycle and rally car racing. The inaugural MISuperMoto X at Auto City Speedway in Clio, Michigan will feature action sports racing on a new 80/20 asphalt/dirt course on Saturday, August 16.
Supermoto is a growing discipline of motorcycle racing where racers of various talents take to an asphalt/dirt course on specially-prepared motocross bikes with slick tires and large brakes. Fans can watch them slide sideways into the paved corners, jump dirt sections, and hit high-speed straightaways. Rally car racing is becoming a very popular action sport as well with drivers sliding small all-wheel drive sedans through turns and getting air over jumps. The most common car used is the Subaru WRX. The MISuperMoto X will be the first Michigan event where rally cars race on an asphalt/dirt closed-course.
The owners of Auto City Speedway are building a new permanent 80/20 asphalt/dirt course inside the facility’s speedway oval. This course has been designed with input from Dave Duprey, owner of the MISuperMoto series and an accomplished motorcycle racer. In May, a supermoto rider and a rally car driver will test the new course allowing for changes to be made, if necessary, before the August race.
AMA Supermoto Championship pro racers are invited to participate in the inaugural MISuperMoto X which is the weekend between the Connecticut and Wisconsin AMA rounds. The pro class will feature at least a $2,500 cash purse with no engine displacement requirement (250s, 450s and 550s race the same class). The facility has the ability to accommodate team transporters along with the amateur and rally car racers. Elimination qualifiers will lead into the evening’s 21-lap pro main event. There will also be one amateur class with an open engine classification and no separate classes for experience level.
The rally car race will feature drivers busting out fast laps on the pavement and hitting supermoto-style dirt jumps. Elimination heats where cars run two per heat with bracket-style racing will serve as the qualifiers. This will lead to a two-car, four-lap main event. The racing action will alternate between the supermoto bikes and rally cars with the rally car heats starting first.
“We are creating a new event that Michigan race fans have longed for,” said Duprey. “I am extremely excited to bring a combined supermoto and rally car race to the Midwest with a goal to make this an annual event. I want to thank Joe Dewitte at Auto City for building the new track and committing other resources.”
Fans can purchase adult tickets for $15; children age 6-12 are $5; and less than six-years-old enter free for this can’t-miss event. Fan gates open at 4 p.m. Entry fees for the supermoto and rally car racers will be announced on www.misupermoto.com by March 15.
